How to check on the contract
- Open the official USDT contract on Etherscan (Ethereum) or Tronscan (TRON).
- Go to the “Contract” tab, then “Read Contract”.
- Find the function for blacklist status (on the USDT contract it is named isBlackListed or getBlackListStatus).
- Paste the address and query. True means frozen; false means not frozen.
Reading a contract is free and needs no wallet connection.
What a frozen address means
- If you receive from it: a frozen address cannot send USDT, so a “payment” from it is impossible.
- If you send to it: funds sent to a frozen address may be stuck. Do not send.
- If your own address is frozen: it is usually linked to a law enforcement request. Contact Tether through its official site and, if relevant, a lawyer.
Freeze-related scams
Scammers send messages saying your USDT is “frozen for AML review” and must be “unfrozen” for a fee. Tether does not contact individuals to collect unfreeze fees. How Tether freezes really happen.

Reading the contract, screen by screen
-
01 Open the contract
- Ethereum
- Etherscan, USDT token page
- Tab
- Contract
-
02 Read Contract
- Function
- isBlackListed
- Input
- the address to check
-
03 Result: false
- Meaning
- not frozen
USDT at this address can move.
-
04 Result: true
- Meaning
- frozen
USDT at this address cannot be sent.
On Etherscan the USDT contract’s Read Contract tab lists its public functions. The one you want takes an address and returns true or false. On Tronscan, the USDT TRC20 contract page has a similar contract section where you can call read functions. Interfaces change, so if a function name differs slightly, look for the one that mentions the blacklist.
When this check is useful
| Situation | Why check |
|---|---|
| A large P2P or OTC deal | A frozen sender cannot pay you; a “payment” from it is fake |
| You are about to send to a new address | Funds sent to a frozen address may be stuck |
| A message says your USDT is frozen | Check yourself instead of paying a “fee” |
| Investigating a scam address | See whether action has already been taken |
What the check cannot tell you
- Why an address was frozen. The contract stores only the status.
- Exchange freezes. An exchange can freeze an account without Tether blacklisting the address.
- Other tokens. The USDT blacklist covers USDT only. USDC has its own controls by Circle.
- Copy tokens. A copy token is not on Tether’s contract, so the blacklist does not apply to it at all.
Third-party freeze trackers
Some sites list addresses Tether has frozen and when. They are useful for research but can lag or be incomplete. For a decision that involves money, read the contract yourself. Be wary of “freeze checker” sites that ask you to connect a wallet or pay: checking a public contract never requires either. Fake checker sites.
If your own address shows true
A frozen address is usually linked to a legal or law enforcement process. Do not pay anyone who offers to unfreeze it. Contact Tether through its official website for information, and if you believe it is a mistake, consider speaking to a lawyer. How Tether freezes work.
USDT freeze wallet check: when to use it
A USDT freeze wallet check tells you whether Tether has blacklisted a specific address. It is useful in a few situations, and not useful in others.
| Situation | Useful? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your own USDT will not send | Yes | A freeze is one possible cause |
| Checking a counterparty before a large trade | Somewhat | Shows if they are already blacklisted, not if they are honest |
| After reporting a scam | Yes | Shows if the scammer’s address has been frozen |
| Checking if a token is flash | No | Freezes apply to real USDT; use a contract check instead |
To check whether a token is real USDT, see how to check flash USDT.
USDT freeze tracker sites: what to trust
A USDT freeze tracker site collects blacklist events from the USDT contracts and lists frozen addresses. Some are run by analytics firms and are useful. Others are traps.
- A tracker that only needs an address to search is fine.
- A tracker that needs a wallet connection is not.
- A tracker that says your address is frozen and offers to unfreeze it for a fee is a scam.
When in doubt, check the contract directly on the explorer, as described earlier on this page.
USDT freeze addresses list: what it shows
A USDT freeze addresses list is built from public blacklist events on the official contracts. It shows the address, the network and the time of the freeze. It does not show why the address was frozen, who owns it, or whether funds will be returned.
- Search the address you care about.
- Note the network and date of any freeze.
- If it is a scammer’s address you reported, tell the police officer handling your case.

Freeze scams to avoid
- “Your USDT is frozen, pay to release it” messages from strangers.
- “We can freeze the scammer’s wallet for you, for a fee” offers.
- “Your wallet is flagged, connect here to clear it” sites.
Only Tether can freeze or unfreeze USDT at its contracts, and it acts on requests from law enforcement, not paid intermediaries. See crypto recovery scams.
