How the freeze works
The USDT contracts on Ethereum and TRON include functions that let Tether add an address to a blacklist. A blacklisted address cannot transfer USDT. In some cases Tether has also destroyed frozen USDT and reissued the same amount to a recovery address, so it could be returned to victims through legal process.
Real cases
Public reporting describes Tether working with the US Department of Justice to freeze millions of dollars in scam proceeds, and Tether has said it has frozen billions in USDT tied to suspected crime since 2023. These are law enforcement actions, not a service for individuals.
What a victim can do
- Report quickly to your national cybercrime unit with the addresses and hashes.
- Report to the exchanges involved; if funds reached an exchange, it may freeze the account.
- Ask investigators whether a freeze request to Tether is possible while funds are still in place.
- Do not pay anyone who offers to arrange a freeze. Real freezes are not sold.
Fake freeze and unfreeze scams
- “Your USDT is frozen, pay to unfreeze”: a fee scam.
- “We can get Tether to freeze the scammer for a fee”: a recovery scam. Recovery scams.
- “Flash USDT cannot be frozen”: sellers claim it as a feature. It cannot be frozen because it is not USDT.
Check an address
You can check whether an address is blacklisted yourself on the contract. USDT freeze checker.

What the freeze does in the contract
The USDT contracts include functions that let Tether add addresses to a blacklist. A blacklisted address cannot transfer USDT. Tether has also used a function to destroy the USDT held by a blacklisted address and, through legal processes, reissue equivalent USDT so it can be returned to rightful owners. These steps are visible on chain.
Why the first hours matter
Scammers move funds quickly, often through many addresses and into other tokens or chains. Once USDT has been swapped into something else, Tether’s controls no longer apply to it. A report filed within hours, with exact hashes, is far more useful than one filed weeks later.
Exchange freezes are different
| Who freezes | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Tether | USDT at a specific blockchain address, any holder |
| An exchange | An account on that exchange, any asset |
| A bank | A bank account, fiat money |
All three can matter in one case. That is why your report should go to the authorities, the exchanges involved and, for fiat payments, your bank.
Fake freeze messages
A message saying your own USDT is frozen and can be released for a fee is a scam. Check the address yourself on the contract: USDT freeze checker.
Tether freeze stolen USDT: what has to happen first
For Tether to freeze stolen USDT, a few things usually have to be true. Knowing them helps you act in the right order.
| Condition | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The funds are real USDT on an official contract | Tether cannot freeze copies or other coins |
| The USDT is still at an address Tether can identify | Funds already swapped or sold cannot be frozen as USDT |
| Law enforcement has made a request | Tether acts on requests from authorities |
| The request is quick | Scammers move funds within hours |
Your part is to report quickly with the exact addresses and hashes. See how to report.
USDT blacklist: what a frozen address can and cannot do
When an address is on the USDT blacklist, it can no longer send USDT on that contract. Its USDT balance stays visible but cannot move.
- The address can still hold and send other tokens and coins.
- Other people can still send USDT to it, which is a reason not to pay a blacklisted address.
- Tether can, in some cases, destroy frozen USDT and reissue it, for example to return funds after legal steps.
How to check USDT blacklist status
- Open the official USDT contract on the explorer for the network.
- Use the contract’s read functions to check blacklist status for an address.
- Enter the address and read the result.
Step-by-step screens are on the USDT freeze checker page.
Can Tether freeze USDT you received by mistake?
Tether freezes addresses, not specific transactions. If you received USDT from a scammer, your address is not frozen by that alone. But if you knowingly receive or move stolen funds, your address may be linked to the case.
- If you receive unexpected USDT, do not move it until you understand where it came from.
- If you suspect it is stolen, report it rather than spending it.
- Avoid P2P buyers who pay from third parties; see Binance P2P scams.
