ERC20 and USDT
ERC20 is Ethereum’s token standard: a common set of functions for balances, transfers and approvals. Tether deployed USDT on Ethereum in 2017. Because so many DeFi apps run on Ethereum, ERC20 USDT is widely used in lending, trading and payments.
Gas fees
Every ERC20 transfer costs gas, paid in ETH by the sender. The price depends on how busy the network is. That is why ERC20 USDT transfers cost more than TRC20 or BEP20 ones, and why scammers there prefer methods that do not require them to send many tokens.
Approvals: the feature scammers use
ERC20 includes an approve function so that apps can move your tokens on your behalf. Legitimate apps need it. Phishing sites abuse it: one signature can let a drainer move your USDT later without asking again. Review and revoke approvals you do not recognize with Etherscan’s token approval checker. USDT approval scams explains how they work.
Zero-value transfers
ERC20 lets anyone trigger zero-value transfers that appear in your history from lookalike addresses. They are bait for copy-and-paste mistakes. Address poisoning.
ERC20 vs TRC20
| Item | ERC20 | TRC20 |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Ethereum | TRON |
| Address | 0x…, 42 characters | T…, 34 characters |
| Fees | Gas in ETH, variable | Energy and bandwidth in TRX, usually lower |
| Decimals | 6 | 6 |
| Common scam | Approval drainers | Sprayed copy tokens, multisig takeover |

What happens when you send ERC20 USDT
An ERC20 USDT transfer, step by step

Recipient
balance updated in the contract
You pay gas in ETH. The USDT balance lives in the contract, not in either wallet.
Decimals and amounts
ERC20 USDT uses 6 decimals. On chain, 1 USDT is stored as 1,000,000 units. Wallets and explorers convert that for you. Copy tokens often use 18 decimals, the ERC20 default, which is one quick way to spot them on a token page.
Gas, in practice
A USDT transfer on Ethereum uses more gas than a plain ETH transfer, because it runs contract code. The cost in dollars depends on the gas price at that moment. You need ETH in the sending wallet; without it, you cannot move USDT. That requirement is real, which is why “send ETH for gas to receive your USDT” sounds plausible. It is not: receiving costs the receiver nothing.
When ERC20 makes sense
| Use case | ERC20 fit |
|---|---|
| DeFi lending, trading, liquidity | Strong: most Ethereum apps use ERC20 USDT |
| Small, frequent payments | Weak: fees can outweigh the payment |
| Large transfers between exchanges | Fine, if both sides support it |
| Receiving from strangers | Fine, with the usual contract and confirmation checks |
Layer 2 networks
Ethereum layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum and Optimism carry their own USDT versions with their own contracts. They are not the same as ERC20 USDT on Ethereum mainnet, even though addresses look alike. Check the network and contract before sending or accepting. Tether’s supported protocols page lists where it issues directly.
What is USDT ERC20, compared with other versions?
USDT ERC20 is Tether’s USDT on the Ethereum network, at 0xdAC17F958D2ee523a2206206994597C13D831ec7. It is the same issuer as USDT on TRON and BNB Chain, but a separate token on a separate network.
| ERC20 (Ethereum) | TRC20 (TRON) | BEP20 (BNB Chain) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee paid in | ETH | TRX energy and bandwidth | BNB |
| Typical fee level | Higher, varies with demand | Low | Low |
| Address format | 0x, 42 characters | T, 34 characters | 0x, 42 characters |
| Explorer | Etherscan | Tronscan | BscScan |

USDT ERC20 on the Ethereum network: sending safely
- Make sure you have ETH for the network fee in the sending wallet.
- Choose the Ethereum network (ERC20) when withdrawing from an exchange.
- Check that the receiving platform supports ERC20 USDT for that address.
- Send a small test first for large or new transfers.
- Confirm on Etherscan that the token is the official contract and the status is success.
Ethereum and BNB Chain addresses look the same. Choosing the wrong network can make funds hard or impossible to recover.
USDT-ERC20 scams to know about
- Copy tokens: a token named USDT at another contract. See flash USDT ERC20.
- Approvals: sites that request permission to spend your USDT. See approval scams.
- Zero-value transfers: fake entries in your history from look-alike addresses. See address poisoning.
- “Send ETH for gas” requests: a buyer or seller asks you to pay gas to release a balance.
Reading an ERC20 USDT transfer on Etherscan
On Etherscan, a USDT transfer appears in the section listing ERC-20 tokens transferred, not in the ETH value field. Click the token name to confirm the contract. See verifying USDT on Etherscan for a full walkthrough.
Questions about USDT ERC20
Why are ERC20 fees sometimes high?
Ethereum fees depend on network demand. When many people transact, fees rise.
Is USDT on Ethereum layer 2 networks the same?
USDT on layer 2 networks uses different contracts. Check the official address for that network before accepting it.
Questions people ask
What is USDT ERC20?
Tether’s USDT on Ethereum, from contract 0xdAC17F958D2ee523a2206206994597C13D831ec7.
Why are ERC20 fees higher?
Ethereum gas prices depend on demand and are often higher than TRON or BNB Chain fees.
Can I send ERC20 USDT to a TRC20 address?
No. The networks are separate. Match the network to the receiver.
What is a token approval?
A permission that lets a contract move your tokens. Revoke ones you do not recognize.
