The three kinds
Prank and “fake balance” apps
Apps sold as pranks let you type any balance and generate fake “received” screens. Searches like “fake crypto wallet prank app” and “fake bitcoin wallet app” find them. In scams, their screenshots become payment proof in P2P deals and romance or investment fraud.
Cloned wallets
Copies of Trust Wallet, MetaMask, TronLink, Exodus and others, distributed through ads, lookalike websites, Telegram and sometimes app stores. They work at first. When you import or create a wallet, the recovery phrase is sent to the attacker, who empties it later.
“Flash wallet” apps
Apps sold as flash USDT or flash bitcoin wallets show large balances and fake transfers, and often carry malware. Flash USDT APKs.
Prank wallet (sample)
- Tether USDUSDT25,000.00$25,000.00
- BitcoinBTC1.00$0 on chain
The same address on the real explorer
- USDT balance
- 0.00
- Last transfer
- none
How to check a balance or payment is real
- Ask for the wallet address or the transaction hash, not a screenshot.
- Open the explorer for the network yourself and search it.
- For tokens, check the contract address. For coins, check confirmations.
- If you are being paid, check your own wallet or exchange, not the payer’s screen.
Installing a real wallet safely
- Go to the wallet maker’s official website by typing it, and follow its store links.
- Check the developer name and download count on the store page.
- Never install a wallet from a link in a chat, an ad or a search result you did not verify.
- If a wallet asks for your existing recovery phrase on first launch without you choosing “import”, stop.

How a cloned wallet steals the phrase
-
01 The ad or link
- Says
- “Trust Wallet, new version”
- Leads to
- a lookalike site
-
02 Install
- App
- looks identical
- Developer
- not the real one
-
03 Import wallet
- You enter
- 12-word phrase
- Sent to
- attacker
-
04 Later
- Your funds
- moved
Often days later, so you do not connect it to the app.
Prank apps and the law
Apps that generate fake wallet balances are sometimes sold openly as jokes. Using one to show a friend a fake balance is a prank. Using its screens to make someone hand over goods, money or crypto is fraud. Sellers of goods and P2P traders should assume any screen shown to them could be one of these, and check their own accounts instead.
Spotting a clone
| Check | Real wallet |
|---|---|
| Developer name on the store page | Matches the official company |
| Install count and age | Large, years of history |
| Where you found the link | The official website |
| First launch | Lets you create or import by choice |
| Requests | No accessibility or SMS permissions |
Hardware wallets are cloned too
Fake hardware wallets and tampered devices have been sold through unofficial marketplaces, sometimes with a pre-filled recovery card. A real hardware wallet never comes with a recovery phrase already written for you. Buy only from the manufacturer or its authorised resellers, and generate the phrase yourself on the device.
Fake USDT wallet app vs a cloned wallet
A fake USDT wallet app and a cloned wallet are different threats, though both look like wallets.
| Fake USDT wallet app | Cloned wallet | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Show a fake balance to sell flash USDT or fake payments | Steal your recovery phrase and real funds |
| How it looks | A generic wallet, often with a flash or send feature | A near-perfect copy of a known wallet |
| Where it comes from | Links from sellers | Fake store listings, ads, look-alike websites |
| What it asks for | Fees to send or withdraw | Your recovery phrase during “import” |
Both are avoided the same way: install wallets only from official stores via the developer’s official website.
Fake bitcoin wallet app tricks
A fake bitcoin wallet app may show incoming BTC that never existed, or show your real BTC while secretly sending your phrase to the attacker.
- It may generate addresses controlled by the attacker, so anything sent to “your” address goes to them.
- It may replace addresses you paste with the attacker’s.
- It may show fake confirmations for a payment that never happened.
Search any receiving address on a public bitcoin explorer. If the app’s balance does not match, delete the app. See flash bitcoin.
Fake crypto wallet prank apps
Fake crypto wallet prank apps are sold as jokes: show your friends a huge balance. Scammers use the same apps to fake payments to sellers or to show “proof” of profits.
The app itself may be legal to publish in some places, but using it to deceive someone into giving you money or goods is fraud. For sellers, the lesson is simple: a balance on someone else’s phone means nothing. Check payments only in your own wallet. See fake payment screenshots.
How to install a real wallet safely, step by step
- Go to the wallet’s official website by typing the address you already know or from a trusted source.
- Follow the website’s link to the app store listing, instead of searching the store.
- Check the developer name, the number of downloads and the reviews.
- Install, create a new wallet, and write the recovery phrase on paper, offline.
- Never type the phrase into any website, chat or second app.
For browser extensions, install only from the official extension store link on the wallet’s website. See MetaMask scams and Trust Wallet scams.
If you used a fake wallet app
- Delete the app.
- If you imported a recovery phrase into it, treat that phrase as compromised.
- Create a new wallet in an official app on a clean device and move all funds there.
- Revoke token approvals from the old wallet if any funds remain.
- Check your phone for other apps installed at the same time.
If the app came as an APK, also follow the clean-up list in flash USDT APK.
